1) Understand the structure and ownership of the media sector

The Major Media Sectors are: television, film, radio, press, interactive, advertising and marketing, computer games, print and music. The Film industry produces features and documentaries. The television industry also produces the same kind of content as film, but create other products such as news, drama series, comedies, presentation shows etc, as well as other formats bought in, for example Big Brother on Channel 4 which is purchased from Ender mol. Radio is a communication system based on broadcasting electromagnetic information and also entertains the target audiences who like to listen to music it informs and entertain them to listen. Advertising and marketing products persuade an audience to purchase products or services. This media sector is about advertising a product or information to all type of target audience. This media sector is relevant in television, radio, print and web, where people get information about things they don’t now or see. This also includes Print products like posters, flyers and books. Computer game products are fantasy and action; Interactive products are such as CD-ROM and website. There are also different types of companies such as: Sony, BBC, ITV, EMAP, KMP, CLIMAX and etc.

The first media industry i have looked at is the film industry, this is one of the media industries whch is made up of a small number of companies. the film companies are, Paramount, Sony, MGM, Sony and the television companies are BskyB, ITV and Carlton. computer game company is Climax, team 17 and eurocom. Radio companies are star radio, mix 96,sun fm. Music companies are emi, warner music group, Sony music entertaining. Print companies

There are different types of ownership such as: Private ownerships, they are Companies which are owned by a group of people who own shares, Shares cannot be owned by the general public because private companies such as Google, YouTube, face book, etc, are able to operate with only limited information being available in their business in a commercial market.  Public ownership has also shares widely traded on the stock of the market place. Public limited companies also have to report on their business operations to their shareholders and companies’ house, organization that oversees the business of limited companies; it examines and stores company information’s. This ownership is located in one country but there are also companies that are multinational companies that work across a number of countries. Examples of this would be News Corporation and Viacom, they work all around the countries, and you can find them everywhere.

There are also independent ownerships that are generally owned by an individual or a small group of investors these are people who work on their own without belonging to larger companies, example of this companies are DreamWorks Animation which produced “Shrek”, “Madagascar” and “Kung fu panda” this was published in 2004 and image entertainment is also an independent company which produced “My name is Bruce” this was published in 1981.

The private ownership is media companies owned by, one or more people, who can do what they want with the business an example is face book that’s a social network website which everyone around the world use. The company provides messaging services among its users.
The public ownership is media companies owned by shareholders and trades on the stock market for example BskyB. They are band by governmental restrictions because these companies, while having a CEO, also have a board of directors who have the power to direct the company and fire the CEO if they see it. If one wanted to, and had the funds, they could also buy a majority of the stock, and they end up a majority shareholder and take control of a company.

Cross-media is when more than one media area comes together, often in a business relationship for example, television and comics. Another example is New Corporation owned by Rupert Murdoch that has interests in other areas of media, television, film and the press.

Vertical companies can help to produce the materials needed for production. This provides a reliable workflow with increased profits for the company. Vertical integration describes a group of companies that are related through a hierarchy with a common owner, for example apple Inc it has apple design dept, manufacturing, distribution store selling computers and iPods and apple on-line digital music sales.  Apple is who design their computer hardware, operating systems and much of the software used in their products. They have also introduced new apple stores for retail sales and the apple iTunes on-line store.

However horizontal integration is when a company expands a business into different products that are similar to the same outline, media companies own producers in one area such as Disney which owns companies mostly in the display sector with TV channels such as Disney Channel and ABC.
